Frequently Asked Questions
Skin is a complex living tissue and the largest organ in our body. Common skin and hair problems like pigmentation, dark circles under eye, hairfall etc are most often a reflection of internal issues like nutritional deficiency, hormonal imbalances etc. Some skin sensitivities and allergies can worsen with aesthetic treatments. Only a doctor with an MBBS and MD dermatology degree can give a holistic approach to skin problems and give safe treatment options. LASERs can do more harm than good in unskilled hands.
Not always. Peels, LASER and other such procedures can give better improvement in shorter timespan. If comparing cost to benefit ratio, few sessions of therapy fares better than prolonged medical treatment with multiple products.
If chosen and done by a trained dermatologist there are no long term harmful effects of LASER and Peels. Most dermatologists themselves personally undergo these treatments regularly.
No. The work of LASERs used for aesthetic treatments starts and ends with skin. They do not penetrate deeper. The only hazard with LASER is the eye hazard to the operator and patient during session. Adequate eye protection is mandatory which is ensured by a trained doctor.
That depends on the procedure. Some procedures need no downtime while others need a week time for skin healing. For most treatments like basic peels, LASER hair removal, PRP no visible skin changes will be present the next day and no one can identify that a procedure has been done. For treatments like scar corrections, excisions and grafting skin may take upto a week to heal.
For a week post treatment it is better to avoid home remedies, parlour procedures, skin rubbing and manipulation, swimming, excessive sun exposure and harsh scrubs and soaps to avoid irritation of treated area. Apply sunscreen, moisturisers and antibiotic creams as prescribed. When in doubt always clarify with the treating dermatologist.
Skin creams, hair serums, supplements and proper skin and hair care form the backbone of any treatment. They can give excellent response by themselves. Aesthetic treatments just offer an alternative option for faster and better outcomes. Except for LASER hair removal for which there is no medical treatment LASERs are not mandatory.
All dermatologists are experts in taking care of skin issues. But doing aesthetic treatments and LASERs need additional training. There are many training centres where doctors get such training for few days to months after MD degree. But there is also an university accredited degree of one year which includes formal training and assessment following which a fellowship degree is awarded. Only they can be displayed on their credentials. In Tamil Nadu, Dr. TNMGR university accredited post doctoral fellowship degree (PDF) is awarded to only 2 to4 dermatologists every year. Dr. Shanmuga Priya holds PDF degree in aesthetic dermatology, the only skin specialist in Madurai to have one. When selecting a dermatologist for aesthetic treatments/LASERs make sure they have such training, skill and experience.
